at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey

Galloway Township, NJ. May, 2010. Chelsea Gallagher has been chosen as a “Designated HERO” by the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers® according to Stephen Davis, Associate Dean of Students. The “Designated HERO” campaign is a new program developed by the HERO Campaign. “The program recognizes outstanding student role models who serve as safe and sober designated drivers for their classmates”, according to Bill Elliott, founder of the HERO Campaign. “With the help of college and university administrators, we are selecting students from various schools who help promote the campaign and its message … Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver.®”

Chelsea is a senior criminal justice major at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and a resident of Brick, NJ. She was nominated by Jamie Sofia, a Tri Sigma sorority sister and president of Stockton’s Greek Council. Sofia wrote in her nomination essay, “I was asked, by the HERO Campaign, to write about someone who exemplifies a hero in my eyes. I have many [sorority] sisters who are there [for me]; however, Chelsea Gallagher stands out from them all. Chelsea puts her sisters’ safety and well being before anything else.”

After Stephen Davis called to let Chelsea know that she was chosen as Stockton’s first “Designated HERO”, she responded, “I was very surprised when I received the phone call telling me I had won. My sorority sister had told me earlier that she nominated me, but I was still really surprised and honored to have won this title.”

The HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers® is a non-profit organization whose mission is to prevent drunken driving tragedies by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers. It was created in August 2000 by the family of Ensign John R. Elliott, who lost his life to a drunken driver on his way home to Egg Harbor Twp., NJ from Annapolis, MD shortly after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Christina Tuozzolo of Freehold was the second place winner based on an essay submitted by Amanda R. Hrehorovich and Carlee Caucino of Toms River took third place based Alexis Peters’ essay.
